Five PPWR Questions Homeware Buyers Ask Us Most
Short answers to the five PPWR questions homeware buyers ask us most: scope, responsibility, existing stock, documentation and recyclability.

Since the EU packaging rules moved into their application stage, the same five questions keep arriving. Short answers below. Treat each as a starting point, not as legal advice.
1. Does PPWR apply to us if we are outside the EU?
Yes, if your packaging goes onto the EU market. The rules follow the packaging, not the company address. If you import homeware into the EU, or sell through an EU distributor, the obligations usually reach you. Ask your compliance adviser which role you hold, because the duties differ between importer, distributor and producer.
2. Who is responsible, us or our supplier?
Whoever places the packaging on the EU market, which is normally the importer. Not the supplier who shipped the goods. The supplier provides information and documents; you decide whether they are enough. Both sides often assume the other one is handling it, so settle this early.
3. Do we have to repackage products we already sell?
No. Requirements phase in over years, so existing stock and new production do not share a deadline. Map your current packaging against the requirements landing next, then change it when a specification comes up for reorder. Check the timing against the official text.
4. What documentation should we collect?
One packaging specification per SKU: component list, material, weight, plus any test certificates the supplier holds. Ask for a file, not an email answer. A document you can forward beats a reply you have to summarise, and it is what you complete a retail questionnaire from.
5. Is recyclable the same everywhere in the EU?
No. Collection and sorting depend on local infrastructure, which differs between member states and even between regions. A material that is easy to recycle in one market can be hard in another. So ask "can this be collected and sorted where we sell it?" rather than "is it recyclable?"
The Same Answer Every Time
All five point the same way: the useful work happens before the order. Packaging specified at quotation gives you time to compare options. Packaging discovered at inspection gives you a problem to solve in a hurry.
The longer version, with what each requirement changes in practice, is in our PPWR checklist for buyers. You can also browse our collections to see the product families these rules apply to.
Member states implement the details differently and requirements phase in over time. Confirm the specifics against the official text and with your importer.
